FAQS
Q Will the kids be surfing every day?
A Activities will depend on the daily conditions.
Q What exactly is coasteering?
A Coasteering moving along the waters edge, with participants wearing helmets, lifejackets and shoes. Sometimes swimming and jumping off the rocks in to the water and making our way along the coast.
Q Coasteering seems dangerous, is that so?
A All sports have an inherent risk. We minimise the risk by staying as close to the waters edge as possible, and taking the safest route. They must wear helmets and life jackets. Moving slowly and steadily, the kids gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, challenging themselves during their adventure.
Q The courses seem quite early in the morning, can’t we do it mid day?
A The mornings are the best time to be on the beach. Few other people are around making it far more enjoyable. Also the sun is less bright at this time, saving the participants from receiving too much sun and therefore sun damage. There is nothing worse than the kids being out in the sun all day and coming home roasted. This skin damage can catch up in later life.
Q My 4/5 year old is extremely active and sporty, can they join?
A No. As strong a 5 year old may be, there is a very good chance that the younger person will be substantially slower than the group, requiring an individual instructor to have to give 100% attention to them, which is not fair the the other participants.
Q What does my child need to bring?
A Water going shoes, old runners etc. Not flip flops or similar. Suncream, rash top, sensible well fitting swimwear.
Q My child does not listen to instructions and tends to take risks. Can they join?
A I insist that all participants follow orders and realise that safety is the priority.

Sun Protection
The biggest danger at the beach is not sea life, sharks, the water (Although watch out for currents and rips) etc. It may well be the sun, and the cumulative effects of being exposed to UV radiation. I have good friends who have had parts of their body cut off to prevent skin cancer taking hold, and there are numerous well documented stories of skin cancer leading to an early death.
As a hard core outdoor enthusiast, I am well aware of the dangers of the sun, and dress accordingly. Hats, sunglasses, long sleeve shirts and UV protective pants play a vital role in staying protected under the sun, and zinc plays a vital role. Nothing works as well a zinc in my experience, and it has the ability to stay on, in the water. 100 SPF suncream? It does not exist, and will probably come off in the water in 20 minutes. Zinc on the other hand can stay on for hours and provides real protection form the sun.
Key Sun, made in Australia for Australian conditions. HKD70 for a 50ml tube. Bronze, white or clear. Pick up in Big Wave Bay.
I would advise a base coat of clear first, then a smothering of the nose, cheeks and lips with white or bronze.
