Geoff McCoy Surfboards (Australia)
Geoff McCoy surfboards is a legend in the world of shaping. He has been shaping since the 60s, and in the day had many of the top Australian surfers under his name. Geoff has always done things his way. He does not follow trends, but is an innovator and is far ahead of the pack in terms of his design philosophy and craftsmanship.
Philosophy
The basis of Geoff McCoy Surfboards’ philosophy is that a board needs to have good volume, sensible width, a rocker that is designed for speed, control through turns, and neutrality for the rider until they input their movement. Fluidity, flow. The rails are soft, allowing the board to fit into a wave and ride smoothly.
Hand shaped boards
Geoff McCoy Surfboards boards are built to last in Byron Bay, using the very best Australian made materials. This results in a board that may well last a decade or more of hard surfing. That’s great for the environment too. Fins are either glassed on or FCSII fin boxes. McCoy fins are included. Prices start at HKD 6500 with transport from Byron Bay at HKD2800.
XF Epoxy Surboards
The XF factory based in Thailand, under license, manufacture machine shaped Geoff McCoy Surfboards using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) blanks with a wood stringer, and finished with epoxy resin, laid up in the traditional way. This results in a very light and strong board, that is very fast and very reactive. They come with FCSII fin boxes. Fins are purchased separately. Prices start at HKD5700 for a 5’8 to 6’6 all round nugget to HKD7500 for a 9 foot longboard. Fins are not included.
Personal Experience
I have been riding Geoff McCoy Surfboards boards since 2002, when I ordered the first board for my then girlfriend (Now wife). I fell in love with the design. Volume, width, speed, control, these boards had it all. (I fell in love with my wife too.) Geoff’s no nonsense outlook was extremely refreshing, he firmly believes in his design principles and will not be compromised on design or workmanship. That board from 2002, now 16 years old, is going as strong as it was when I first bought it. Try that with many expensive but fragile boards you can buy these days, you’d be lucky to get one year out of some of them.
