5 spots to surf in Hong Kong

5 spots to surf in Hong Kong

So here we are, the best 5 beaches to Surf in Hong Kong.

Big Wave Bay and Shek O.

On Hong Kong Island there are two locations, Big Wave Bay and Shek O beach. Both bays that have consistent winter swell from November though to March. They can also handle typhoon swell that will hit Hong Kong from March up to November. With global warming,  typhoons are hitting later in the year and with more intensity than previously. Big Wave Bay can handle swell up to a few hours before the number 8 is hoisted. Shek O can handle most swell   as it is facing 90 degrees in relation to Big Wave Bay. The  swells wrapping somewhat around before hitting the beach. Transportation details are provided here.

Sai Kung

Tai Long Wan in Sai Kung work on the same conditions as Big Wave Bay. Tail Long Wan is Chinese for Big Wave Bay as well.  A beautiful stretch of coast nestled in the country parks. If organised, the transport/speedboat/hike in can be done in around 2 1/2 hours from Central. It is at least a day trip or a weekend camp.  There are no lifeguards on this beach, and the conditions, particularly the rips, can be deadly. In case of injury, the only way out may be via the Government Flying Services’ helicopter, so make sure you have some insurance for non HKSAR residents.  The quality of the wave can be very good, as long as the swell and the banks are in the right position.

Monsoon produces good waves and off shore winds. orecast Hong Kong's waves
A strong north easterly monsoon produces some good waves, which improved all during the day as the wind backed off.

Lantau

The Island of Lantau has two breaks. Pui O and Cheung Sha, Both these breaks perform best in South Westerly conditions. This is a summer time wave. It can get good in the right conditions. Don’t bother if it is force 3 to 4. You need at least 4 to 5 winds. Heavy rain, dark clouds, thunder. These are conditions that suit Lantau. The easiest way to get to either beach is via Tung Chung. A taxi then costs about HKD120 one way. Buses go there too, but you’ll need to check if they carry boards. Rentals here are few and far between, but lower Cheung Sha may be your best option.

Hope this information helps. Check the weather here.  If you need to book a lesson, email here.

Antony is a very good coach, great surfer, very professional, patient and observant. With Antony's coaching, I have some key breakthrough and manage to catch some unbroken waves. He’s always helpful no matter whether I am asking for advice for buying a surfboard or picking a destination for surf holiday. I would highly recommend Antony for anyone who would like to take surf lessons in Hong Kong.

Love my experience with Surf HK!! Learned surfing for a while now. I have surfed in Mexico, Hawaii, US, Thailand and always had experiences hiring someone to go with me as I still have so much to learn when it comes to surfing. The thing I have learned is that you can’t fake passion for surfing. Additionally, you may be good at surfing but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a good teacher. No doubt Antony is both. He has taken it to a whole different level when it comes to teaching. The level of commitment he showed in helping me getting better is very apparent. Seriously, do u want ur surfing experience to be enjoyable, amazing and really developing that into a habit, instead of just popping up on ur board for once and done? If you’re the former, go with this guy. This is the guy.

When I had my lesson the waves were quite large so the instructor insisted that we needed one instructor per student for safety. It was really fun but I felt safe, and after a few waves I managed to stand up and ride all the way to the beach. After this lesson, I continued practicing surfing, and now I get in the water as often as I can. Excellent job Antony!

I was pleasantly surprised arriving at Big Wave Bay. It is a beautiful beach and nice rolling waves, only 25 minutes away from the city. Stunning. The instruction I received was first class, and I was well looked after and learnt a heap. Totally recommend Surfing Hong Kong.

Alison

My 8 year old son has been learning to surf with Anthony for the past couple of years. Last year we organised a group of Rafa and his friends to join a summer holiday surf camp which was absolutely fantastic. It ran all summer, 3 days per week - the kids couldn't wait to jump in the water! Antony has an amazing rapport with children and they love to be around him. He makes their experiences educational and fun at the same time. Antony is an all around experienced water man, so when the surf is not up the kids would go coasteering which they also loved. With safety helmets, life jackets and rock shoes they would go off for a good 1.5 hours learning how to safely navigate the coastline of Big Wave Bay to Shek O and learning safe places to jump into the water. Rafa again can't wait for the summer holidays so he can join the surf summer camp!!

Antony Dickson has been my Indonesian, Hawaiian and elsewhere surf partner on at least one trip a year for the past 19 years for good reason: He is always challenging himself and those around him to push their limits yet his enthusiasm is always tempered by a belief of keeping safety of paramount importance - he's always the first to offer help in critical conditions when a leash or board snaps. His smooth, powerful and emminently competent surfing style excels in waves waist-high to triple overhead but he's much more than a surfer. Antony's passion for the ocean runs deep and he surf skis, dives and is a third generation competitive swimmer. I witnessed his tenacity firsthand providing paddle support in a surf ski when he finished fourth in a 15km open ocean race, HK's most prestigious event of its kind, all while solo'ing against relay teams of four. Antony has accrued vast knowledge on preparation and water safety on his global surf sojourns and more importantly, he enjoys sharing it. Combined with swim and paddle techniques and tips, he is much more than just a surf instructor.
